Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 1894 Carbine is a desirable C&R-eligible flat-band example manufactured in 1948 and chambered in .30 W.C.F. / .30-30 Winchester. The flat-band front barrel band configuration is a notable post-war feature and gives this carbine added collector interest over more common later production examples. It retains the classic 20″ barrel, full-length tubular magazine, smooth walnut stocks, straight grip, straight comb, checkered steel Winchester buttplate, hooded ramp front sight, and fine-adjustable U-notch elevator rear sight, making it a very traditional mid-century Winchester sporting carbine.
Condition is Good to Very Good overall, with the rifle retaining about 85% of its original blue finish. The metal shows thinned finish around the receiver, scattered scratches, light corrosion staining, and normal handling and operational wear, but the markings remain clear and the screw heads, though lightly tooled, are serviceable. The smooth walnut stocks show scattered scratches, compression dents, and weathered finish loss, but there are no chips or cracks. Overall, the wood remains solid and presents well with honest field wear appropriate to a 1948 hunting rifle.
The bore is a strong point, remaining bright with sharp rifling, no erosion, and only light fouling, rating 9/10 in this writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, and the rifle retains its half-cock safety and lever safety, though it has not been test fired. As with any used firearm, a thorough cleaning and inspection are advisable before use. Overall, this is an appealing flat-band Winchester Model 94 Carbine in the classic .30-30 chambering, offering solid originality, strong bore condition, functional mechanics, and desirable early post-war Winchester character.
