Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1A was manufactured in May 1985 and is chambered in .308 Winchester with an 18-inch barrel, creating a handier and more compact variant of the classic M14-pattern rifle. The rifle is fitted with a traditional M14-style flash hider that appears to have been shortened creating a very unique look. Early Springfield Armory M1A rifles from this era are highly regarded for their quality and close ties to the military heritage of the M14 service rifle, offering shooters a robust and accurate semi-automatic platform chambered in a full-power rifle cartridge.

What truly sets this rifle apart is its installation in a BM59 Alpini/Paratrooper-style stock assembly. The stock features a wood handguard paired with a polymer pistol grip and a distinctive wire-frame folding stock that not only folds for compact storage and transport but also collapses down making the profile of the wire frame smaller when stowed. A small rubber butt pad provides a practical improvement in shooter comfort while preserving the unique military aesthetic of the design. Inspired by the Italian Beretta BM59, itself an evolution of the M1 Garand, this configuration gives the rifle an unmistakable Cold War appearance that stands apart from conventional M1A builds. The result is an exceptionally unique rifle that blends American M14 heritage with the innovative styling and functionality of one of the Garand family’s most fascinating descendants.
