Markings: Left side of the trunnion is marked with the factory 66 logo and “MS017073“ The left side of the receiver is marked “56S / SEMI AUTO / 7.62X39MM / MADE IN CHINA / BY NORINCO / SILE N.Y. N.Y.”. The rear of the dust cover is marked “17073”. The right side of the receiver is marked “S” and “F” near the safety lever. The bolt and bolt carrier are marked “17073”. The recoil spring is marked “17073”.
Barrel Length: 16.25” threaded. 18.25” with a 74 style muzzle device.
Sights / Optics: The front sight is an adjustable hooded pin. The rear sight is a “U” tangent notch leaf sight marked from “1 – 8” and “D” for the battle position.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The furniture is a three piece wood set with a straight comb, vented hand guard, wooden semi pistol grip, and metal buttplate with trapdoor. Cleaning kit in buttstock. There is light handling wear. There are light scratches and compressions in the wood. The LOP measures 12.25” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Fine overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. There is fouling in the grooves. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light handling wear. There are light scratches and thinning which is common with Norinco imports. There is light operational wear. The screw heads are sharp and the pins are unmarred. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Norinco 56S series represents one of the most sought-after Chinese AK-pattern rifles imported into the United States. Built on the proven Type 56 platform, these rifles combined military-style construction with semi-automatic operation for the commercial market. Imported by SILE Distributors, the 56S rifles are known for their quality machining, chrome-lined barrels, and smooth operation. Chambered in 7.62×39mm, they have become increasingly collectible due to the long-standing prohibition on further Chinese rifle imports.
This post-ban example presents in very good plus overall condition and retains matching serialized components throughout the major operating assemblies. The bolt, bolt carrier, recoil spring assembly, dust cover, and trunnion all bear matching numbers, a feature highly valued by AK collectors. The wood furniture remains in fine condition with only light handling marks and no structural issues noted. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, no visible erosion, and only light fouling present, earning a strong 9/10 rating.
