Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY .45”. The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT F.A. MFG. CO HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.”. The left side of the frame is marked “PAT. SEPT. 19, 1871” / “JULY 2, 72 JAN. 19, 75” and a Rampant Colt logo. The loading gate is marked with “117”. The interior front strap, back strap, and bottom of the frame are marked with the serial number. The face of the cylinder is marked with “048” and the rear is marked with a Rampant Colt. The interior of the grip panels are marked with the last three numbers of the serial number.
Barrel Length: 7 1/2″
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a tall thin blade fixed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a square notch milled into the topstrap which is visible when cocked.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are a two-piece checkered, hard rubber, with a Rampant Colt inside an oval. There are handling scratches and compression marks. There is some peak loss on the right panel. The outer edges of the checkering have started to round over. There are no chips or cracks. Overall these grips are in Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. There is fouling in the bore. In this writer’s opinion this bore rates 9/10.
Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 92% of its original metal finish. There are scattered handling scratches throughout. There is finish loss and thinning along the leading edges of the barrel, cylinder, and the grip straps. The cylinder shows finish loss around the flutes and the rear edges. There are minor abrasions on the rear of the trigger guard. The ejector rod and the hammer show operational wear. The case color is vivid. The screw heads are sharp with light tooling. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver is in Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this revolver. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Colt Single Action Army is one of the most iconic American revolvers ever produced, introduced in 1873 and closely associated with the U.S. military, frontier lawmen, ranchers, and generations of sporting shooters. Colt’s 2nd Generation Single Action Army revolvers, produced after the postwar reintroduction of the model, are especially desirable to collectors because they retain classic SAA styling, traditional fixed sights, case-colored frames, and the workmanship associated with mid-century Colt production. This 1968-manufactured example is C&R eligible and is chambered in the classic .45 Colt cartridge with the desirable 7 1/2″ barrel configuration.
This Colt Single Action Army 2nd Generation is a 6-shot single-action revolver with a side loading gate, 7 1/2″ barrel, tall fixed blade front sight, and square-notch rear sight milled into the topstrap. The revolver retains about 92% of its original blue and case-colored finish, with scattered handling scratches, thinning and finish loss along the leading edges of the barrel, cylinder, and grip straps, finish loss around the cylinder flutes and rear edges, minor abrasions on the rear of the trigger guard, and operational wear on the ejector rod and hammer. The case colors remain vivid, the screw heads are sharp with light tooling, and the markings are clear. The two-piece checkered hard rubber grips with Rampant Colt in an oval rate in Fine condition, showing handling scratches, compression marks, some peak loss on the right panel, and rounding at the outer edges of the checkering, with no chips or cracks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, fouling present, no erosion, and rates 9/10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly, though the revolver has not been test fired. Overall, this is a Fine condition 1968 Colt 2nd Generation Single Action Army in .45 Colt with classic long-barrel SAA appeal, vivid case color, strong mechanics, and honest finish wear.
