Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “- WINCHESTER MODEL 70 XTR FEATHERWEIGHT – 257 ROBERTS -“, along with Winchester’s New Haven address. The left side of the receiver is marked “WINCHESTER / – TRADE MARK -“. The right side of the receiver is marked with the serial number.

Sights / Optics: There are no provisions for iron sights. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped for optics.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered walnut stock, with a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, red rubber Winchester buttpad, a checkered and schnabel tipped forend, with sling studs front and rear. The LOP measures 12 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stock shows light wear, with a few light scratches, dings, and compressions scattered throughout. The checkering is well defined, and the stock’s finish is intact. The stock fits tightly to the barreled action, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stock rates in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light wear, with light thinning of the finish at the muzzle, and a few scattered dings and scratches throughout the metal surfaces, most notably on the floorplate and trigger guard. The bluing is otherwise deep, dark, and intact. The jeweling on the bolt is vivid and bright. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are lightly tooled, but retain strong and serviceable slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: Winchester’s Model 70 is one of America’s most recognizable bolt-action sporting rifles, long respected for its hunting pedigree, strong action, and classic field handling. The XTR Featherweight variant was designed as a lighter, handier sporting rifle, and this 1982 example is chambered in .257 Roberts, a mild-recoiling and efficient classic cartridge appreciated for varmint, predator, deer, and antelope hunting. This rifle features a 22″ barrel, drilled and tapped receiver for optics, blued finish, internal magazine with hinged floorplate, and a checkered walnut Featherweight stock with schnabel forend and red Winchester buttpad. The walnut stock rates in Very Good condition, showing light scratches, dings, and compressions while retaining well-defined checkering, an intact finish, tight fit to the barreled action, and no chips or cracks. The metal shows light wear, including thinning at the muzzle and scattered small dings and scratches, most notably on the floorplate and trigger guard, though the bluing remains deep, dark, and intact overall. The bolt jeweling is vivid and bright, the markings are clear and legible, the screw heads are lightly tooled but serviceable, and the action and safety function correctly.
