Serial Number: 001477

Year of Manufacture: 1994-2000

Caliber: .416 Remington Magnum

Action Type: Bolt Action, Internal Magazine, Hinged Floorplate.

Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “KRIEGER / 416 REM. MAG.”. The left side of the receiver is marked “Mountain Eagle Rifle by MRI. Mpls, MN, USA / Action by SAKO, Finland 001477”.

Barrel Length: 24″ Sporter Contour; 26″ with Radial Muzzle Brake attached. Match Grade Krieger Barrel, Cut Rifling. The muzzle brake is attached very tightly, unable to verify thread pitch. Unknown twist rate. The action is a Sako 91, which were specially made for Magnum Research for this rifle. These rifles were made in the factory, by Magnum Research with Sako 91 actions, and paired with Krieger barrels.

Sights / Optics: There are no provisions for iron sights. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped for optics. The Sako 91 action uses the same optic base footprint as the Remington 700.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece, H-S Precision composite stock finished in a black base with gray spiderweb accented finish. The stock features a semi-pistol grip, straight comb with shadow-line cheekpiece, black rubber H-S Precision buttpad, a smooth forend, and sling studs front and rear. The LOP measures 13 3/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stock shows light handling wear, aside from a considerable crack on the bottom of the forend that extends out to the forend tip from the sling stud, and down the forend behind the sling stud about 1″. The crack has been glued/epoxy’d over as a repair. The stock’s finish is intact, otherwise. The stock fits tightly to the barreled action, with no play. Overall, the stock rates in Good to Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Graphite Black

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light wear, with light finish loss on the bolt, and friction surfaces of the action from operation, along with minor freckling of surface corrosion on the top tang, trigger guard, and on the barrel just forward of the receiver. There are a few minor scratches and dings scattered throughout the metal surfaces. There is light residual adhesive residue on the top of the receiver where scope mounts used to sit. The finish is largely intact, otherwise. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are tooled, but serviceable. Overall, this rifle rates in Good to Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. The trigger has a crisp and clean break. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements. This rifle weighs in at 8 pounds, 1 ounce.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: Magnum Research’s Mountain Eagle Rifle was a distinctive factory-built big game rifle that paired a specially made Sako 91 action with premium components, including a match-grade Krieger cut-rifled barrel and H-S Precision composite stock. This example is chambered in .416 Remington Magnum, a powerful dangerous game cartridge designed to deliver heavy performance for large and dangerous game while fitting in standard magnum-length actions. This rifle features a 24″ Krieger sporter contour barrel, measuring 26″ with the radial muzzle brake installed, a Sako 91 action using the Remington 700 scope base footprint, drilled and tapped receiver, H-S Precision spiderweb composite stock, hinged floorplate, and crisp trigger. The Sako action, Krieger barrel, powerful .416 Remington Magnum chambering, and relatively uncommon model overall, should appeal to collectors, serious big game hunters, and buyers looking for a distinctive premium magnum rifle.

This rifle rates in Good to Very Good overall condition, retaining about 90% of its original Graphite Black finish. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 10/10 in this writer’s opinion. The H-S Precision stock rates in Good to Very Good condition, showing light handling wear but also a considerable repaired crack on the bottom of the forend extending forward from the sling stud to the forend tip and rearward about 1″, while still fitting tightly to the barreled action with no play. The metal shows light finish loss on the bolt and action friction surfaces, minor freckling of surface corrosion on the top tang, trigger guard, and barrel just forward of the receiver, scattered small scratches and dings, and light adhesive residue on top of the receiver from prior scope mounts. The markings are clear and legible, the screw heads are tooled but serviceable, and the action, safety, and crisp trigger function correctly.
