Sights / Optics: The front sight is a fixed blade set between protective ears. The rear sight is a later style sliding aperture sight with a knurled windage knob dovetailed to the receiver.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is an Oval cut, low wood stock, with a four rivet handguard, type three barrel band with lug, a rotary safety and a checkered metal butt plate. The LOP measures about 13.25”. The wood has been lightly sanded and refinished. The wood shows light lines and compressions scattered throughout. The sling cut shows chips in the edges. The left flank shows rub wear from the sling. There are no cracks. The metal butt plate has lost its finish and shows rub wear on the edges. Overall the stock set is in about Good+-Very Good condition.
Magazine Quantity & Condition: This rifle includes two 15 round magazines both in Good+-Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Parkerized / Blued.
Finish Originality: Refinished
Bore Condition: The bore is bright with well defined rifling. There is no visible erosion. There is no visible pitting. The lands show fouling. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.25/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains 94% of its finish. The friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver show some rub wear. The barrel and muzzle show some rub wear as well. The finish shows discoloration from age especially on the trigger group and bolt. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. There is grease and debris in a lot of the recesses. Overall this rifle is in Good+ condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This Inland M1 Carbine was manufactured during the first production run of 1942 and bears an early five-digit serial number 21928. As the original and largest producer of M1 Carbines, Inland Division played a critical role in bringing the new lightweight carbine into service during World War II. Carbines from this early production period are particularly interesting to collectors as they represent some of the first examples delivered to the U.S. military following America’s entry into the war. This rifle has since been refinished and underwent arsenal-level updates during its service life, reflecting the military’s practice of rebuilding and modernizing carbines as needed.
The rifle is currently fitted with an Underwood barrel dated 1944, indicating a wartime replacement that was likely installed during a rebuild program. It also carries a postwar Springfield Armory slide and stock, further supporting its history as a refurbished service rifle. While no longer in its original 1942 configuration, the combination of an extremely early Inland receiver, wartime Underwood barrel, and postwar Springfield Armory replacement components tells the story of a rifle that remained in military inventory long after its initial production. The result is a fascinating example of an M1 Carbine that spans multiple eras of U.S. military service, from the earliest days of wartime production through the arsenal rebuild programs that kept these rifles in use for decades.
