Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “41 COLT.” The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. Co” / “HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.”. The left side of the frame is marked “PAT. SEPT. 19. 1871” / “JULY 2. 72. JAN. 19. 75” and the circled Rampant Colt logo. The bottom of the frame, trigger guard, and frame butt are all marked with the serial number. The loading gate is marked with “554”. The interior of the grips are scribed with the last four of the serial number. The right panel has the initials “S.A.W. carved inside.
Barrel Length: 4 3/4″
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a fixed blade at the muzzle. The rear sight is a ‘V’ notch on the top strap. Visible when the hammer is cocked.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two piece checkered hard rubber with Rampant Colt molded at the top. There are scratches and handling wear. The checkering is defined, with some smoothing of the peaks from handling. There is some discoloration from age. There are no cracks or chips. Overall, the grips are in Fine condition as antique.

Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright and the rifling is defined. There is some fouling and erosion pitting in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 6/10.
Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 15% of its finish. Most of the finish has worn away from use and age. There are scratches and handling marks throughout. There is minor oxidation pitting through the metal surfaces. There are tool marks at the cylinder pin. The finish on the front and back straps have turned to a patina. The case color is no longer vibrant. The cylinder has a removable bushing. The screw heads are mostly sharp. Overall, this revolver is in Very Good condition as antique.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The lockup is tight with no perceptible play. There is minimal end shake. We did not fire this revolver. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This antique 1898 Colt Single Action Army is a genuine 1st Generation SAA chambered in .41 Colt and fitted with the desirable 4 3/4″ barrel. Introduced in 1873, the Colt Single Action Army became one of the defining revolvers of the American West, serving soldiers, lawmen, ranchers, outlaws, and civilians through the blackpowder and early smokeless eras. While .45 Colt is the best-known chambering, .41 Colt has its own strong collector appeal as a period defensive and sporting cartridge that saw meaningful late-19th and early-20th century use. This example retains classic SAA features including the side-loading gate, fixed blade front sight, topstrap rear notch, removable cylinder bushing, matching serial-numbered frame components, and checkered hard rubber Rampant Colt grips scribed with the last four digits of the serial number, with “S.A.W.” carved inside the right panel.
This revolver rates in Very Good condition as an antique, retaining about 15% of its original blue and case-colored finish, with most surfaces worn from age and use and the grip straps aged to patina. The metal shows scratches, handling marks, minor oxidation pitting, and tool marks at the cylinder pin, while the case colors are no longer vibrant and the screw heads remain mostly sharp. The bore is semi-bright with defined rifling, fouling, and erosion pitting, rating 6/10 in this writer’s opinion. The hard rubber grips rate Fine as antique, showing scratches, handling wear, softened checkering, and age discoloration, but no chips or cracks. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, the lockup is tight with no perceptible play, and there is only minimal end shake. As an authentic antique .41 Colt SAA with honest wear, tight mechanics, and classic frontier-era character, this revolver should appeal to Colt collectors, Old West arms enthusiasts, and bidders seeking a true 19th-century Single Action Army with real historical presence.
