Our Assessment: This Marlin Model 1895 CB Cowboy is a desirable lever-action sporting rifle manufactured in 2009 and chambered in .45-70 Government. The Cowboy configuration is especially attractive, with its 26″ octagon barrel, tubular magazine, straight-grip walnut stock, capped forend, straight comb, and checkered Marlin buttplate giving it a traditional big-bore lever rifle profile. The rifle retains its barrel-mounted beaded front sight and adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sight, while the receiver is drilled and tapped for scope mounting, offering flexibility for either classic iron-sight use or optics.
Condition is Good overall, though the rifle presents better cosmetically, retaining about 97% of its original blued finish. The metal shows only light handling and operational wear with a few light scratches, and the markings remain clear with sharp screw heads. The smooth walnut stock set is in Very Good condition, showing a few light scratches, compression dents, and small chipped spots in the finish, but no cracks. Overall, the rifle has strong exterior appeal and the classic lines expected of the Marlin Cowboy series.
The bore is bright with sharp rifling, no erosion, and only light fouling, but there is a factory blemish in the bore under the front sight dovetail, possibly from the dovetail being cut too deep, bringing the bore rating to 8/10 in this writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the rifle is functional, with the hammer holding at both half and full cock and the crossbolt safety operating as intended, though it has not been test fired. As with any used firearm, a full cleaning and inspection are advisable before use. Overall, this is a handsome and practical Marlin 1895 CB Cowboy in .45-70 Government with excellent exterior condition, desirable octagon-barrel configuration, and strong big-bore lever-action appeal, with the bore blemish being the primary factor limiting its overall grade.
