Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked ” WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL , MODEL 42/ –WINCHESTER– /– TRADE MARK–/-410-3 IN / FULL.” The right side of the barrel is marked with the Winchester barrel address. The front of the receiver and barrel extension are both marked with the serial number “129767”. There are Winchester WP proof marks on the barrel and top of the receiver.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is an orange fiber bead. The top of the receiver is serrated to cut down on glare.
Stock Configuration & Condition: Two-piece wooden stock with semi pistol grip, fluted straight stock, 13-groove pump grip, and hard-rubber Winchester buttplate. There are scratches and compression marks throughout. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 12″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. Stocks rate in about Very Good Condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. There is no erosion in the bore. There is plastic fouling throughout. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 8 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 96% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows handling wear. There are light scratches and thinning throughout. There is operation wear. There is thinning on the leading edges. There are a few nicks throughout. The screw heads are mostly sharp, the markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Repeating Arms Company Model 42 is widely regarded as one of the finest pump-action .410 shotguns ever produced. Introduced in 1933 as a scaled-down companion to the famed Model 12, the Model 42 was purpose-built around the .410 bore cartridge rather than being adapted from a larger frame. Its smooth action, quality machining, and elegant proportions have made it one of the most sought-after Winchester sporting shotguns among collectors and shooters alike.
This 1954-produced example presents in Very Good overall condition, retaining a high percentage of its original finish with only light handling and operational wear visible. The wood stock set remains in Very Good condition with scattered handling marks but no structural damage. The bore is bright with no visible erosion, though plastic fouling is present throughout. The shotgun retains matching serial numbers on the receiver and barrel extension, a desirable feature on takedown Winchesters. The action functions correctly, and the full-choke 26″ barrel maintains the classic field configuration that made the Model 42 so popular. Altogether, this Winchester represents a strong example of one of America’s most collectible .410 pump shotguns.
