Our Assessment:  The Winchester Model 1890 is one of the classic early American pump-action rimfire rifles and was designed by John Moses Browning during Winchester’s golden age of repeating arms development. Chambered in dedicated rimfire cartridges such as .22 Short, .22 Long, .22 Long Rifle, and .22 WRF depending on configuration, the Model 1890 became especially popular for gallery shooting, small-game hunting, farm use, and informal target work. The 3rd Model variation used the takedown system and represents the later, more refined production pattern. This example was manufactured in 1911 and is C&R eligible.

This Winchester 3rd Model 1890 is a takedown pump-action rifle chambered in .22 WRF, fitted with a 24″ octagonal barrel, tubular magazine, Winchester 75A blade front sight, and Winchester 30B elevation-adjustable V-notch rear sight. The rifle has been refinished and retains about 95% of its metal refinish, with scattered handling scratches, compression marks, scuffs, operational wear, corrosion freckling at the forward end of the barrel and in smaller spots throughout, mostly clear markings with some thinning, and a missing forward upper tang screw. The refinished walnut stocks rate in Fair-Good condition, showing scattered handling marks, compression marks, a couple of small forend chips, a small toe chip near the buttplate, a crack from the bottom tang to the grip cap, and a bottom tang that sits proud against the grip. The bore is semi-bright, with rifling beginning to smooth and erosion and pitting present, rating 5/10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly, though the rifle has not been test fired. Overall, this is a Very Good condition refinished 1911 Winchester Model 1890 3rd Model in .22 WRF with strong remaining refinish, desirable Winchester/Browning rimfire history, and noted stock, screw, and bore issues.
