Our Assessment: This Colt Government Model Mk IV Series 80 is a handsome mid-1980s stainless 1911-pattern pistol chambered in classic .45 ACP. The Government Model traces directly to Colt’s long-running commercial version of the M1911, one of the most influential semi-automatic pistol designs of the 20th century. The Series 80 line introduced Colt’s firing pin safety system while retaining the traditional single-action 1911 layout, making these pistols a significant chapter in Colt’s postwar commercial production. This 1985 example is especially attractive with its bright stainless finish, matte-topped slide, fixed sights, stag grips with silver Rampant Colt medallions, and included spare checkered walnut Colt medallion grips.
This pistol rates in about Fine overall condition, with bright stainless surfaces showing minor handling scratches, very light frosting in a few areas, and some light oxidation freckling on the matte top of the slide. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, minor fouling, and no erosion, rating 9/10 in this writer’s opinion. Both sets of grips remain Excellent, with the installed stag panels showing light handling wear and the spare walnut panels retaining sharp checkering with only minor marks and compression dents. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, and the included serial-matching Colt “woodgrain” cardboard box, paperwork, spare grips, and Excellent-condition 7-round magazine make this a well-rounded package for Colt collectors, 1911 enthusiasts, and shooters looking for a vintage stainless Government Model.
