Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1895 is one of the more distinctive Winchester lever-action designs, using an internal box magazine rather than a traditional tubular magazine, allowing it to chamber longer, higher-powered cartridges such as .303 British. This example was manufactured in 1906 and has the classic rifle configuration with a 28” barrel, Schnabel forend, straight wrist stock, crescent steel buttplate, pinned blade front sight, and spring-leaf rear sight with elevator. As a C&R-eligible early 20th-century Winchester, it has appeal as a representative example of one of Winchester’s more mechanically advanced lever rifles.
Conditionally, this rifle shows substantial age, use, and later cosmetic attention. The metal retains about 10% of its original blue finish, with most surfaces worn to a brown patina. It has also been swabbed with cold blue, leaving some streaking and uneven application. There are scratches, corrosion stains, and tool marks throughout, including tool marking near the rear sight. The screw heads are tool marked but remain serviceable, and the markings are still legible. The bore is gray with well-defined rifling and erosion, mostly in the grooves; in this writer’s opinion, it rates 7/10.
The walnut stocks have been lightly sanded and refinished, with slightly raised grain, sanding marks, scratches, compression dents, and a small chip with a crack behind the lever. They remain serviceable and rate Good as refinished, though the alterations and wear place the rifle more in the shooter/representative collector category than the high-condition collector category. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, though the rifle has not been test fired. Overall, this is a Fair condition 1906 Winchester Model 1895 in .303 British, offering classic Winchester character, an interesting chambering, and functional mechanics, with honest wear and refinishing consistent with a rifle that has seen long service.
