Stock Configuration & Condition: The wood stock has a traditional Semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, two sling loops, stacking ring, and a checkered metal butt plate with storage compartment. The LOP measures 13” inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt plate. The wood has been lightly sanded and refinished. The finish shows some minor compressions, surface level lines, and a small scratch with a small chip next to it on the right side of the grip. There are no cracks. The metal butt plate, sling rings and nose caps show discoloration and surface rust from age. The door spring is strong. Overall the stock is in Good+ condition.
Type of Finish: Parkerized
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is well defined. There is very minor visible pitting/erosion in the bore mainly on the lands. Our gauges show a muzzle of 2 and a throat of about 3. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 8/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. The friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver show very minor rub wear. The majority of the finish loss on this rifle is thinning on the edges of the trigger guard gas cylinder, lock, and plug. The exposed portion of the barrel has two spots of finish loss. The front sight shows surface rust. The action is fairly smooth. The safety shows some surface rust. There are some scratches on the area just in front of the rear sight. The markings are clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall the rifle is in about Good+ condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1 Garand was manufactured during the postwar production period between 1952 and 1954 and is fitted with a Springfield Armory barrel dated November 1953. Unlike many Garands that underwent extensive arsenal rebuilds and refinishing during their military service, this rifle appears to retain its original parkerized finish, an increasingly desirable characteristic among collectors. The stock has been lightly sanded and refinished at some point in its life, giving the wood a cleaner appearance while preserving the classic profile of America’s most famous battle rifle.
The M1 Garand was adopted by the U.S. military in 1936 and became the standard American service rifle throughout World War II and the Korean War. Its eight-round en-bloc clip system and semi-automatic operation provided a significant advantage over the bolt-action rifles fielded by many opposing forces. General George S. Patton famously described the Garand as “the greatest battle implement ever devised.” Postwar Springfield-produced rifles such as this one represent the final years of U.S. military Garand production before the adoption of the M14, making them an important part of the rifle’s long and distinguished service history.
