Our Assessment: This Smith & Wesson Model 25-2, the Model 1955 .45 Target Heavy Barrel, is a classic N-frame target revolver chambered for .45 ACP and .45 Auto Rim. The Model 1955 Target continued Smith & Wesson’s long association with large-frame .45 caliber revolvers, tracing its practical roots back to the Model 1917 revolvers made for military use during World War I. The 25-2 became especially popular with bullseye shooters and revolver enthusiasts who appreciated its heavy barrel, excellent adjustable sights, smooth N-frame action, and the ability to use .45 ACP with moon clips or .45 Auto Rim without them. This example has the desirable 6″ pinned full-rib barrel, Patridge front sight, micrometer-click adjustable rear sight, original blue finish, and refinished checkered target stocks with silver S&W medallions.
This revolver rates in about Fine overall condition, retaining approximately 98% of its original blue finish with minor scratches and handling marks, slight muzzle finish loss, carbon rings on the cylinder face, and a turn line behind the flutes. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, fouling in the grooves, and no erosion, rating 9/10 in this writer’s opinion. The refinished target stocks rate Fine-Excellent, showing minor handling wear with sharp checkering and no cracks or chips. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, and the lockup is tight with minimal play at each chamber. The included soft case, 75 moon clips, moon clip loader, and moon clip unloader make this a particularly useful package for the shooter who intends to put this revolver back on the range. With its strong condition, classic target configuration, pinned barrel, and .45 ACP/.45 Auto Rim versatility, this Model 25-2 should appeal to Smith & Wesson collectors, bullseye shooters, and fans of traditional big-bore N-frame revolvers.
