Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 94 AE XTR is a desirable Angle Eject lever-action rifle chambered in .356 Winchester, a comparatively uncommon and powerful chambering in the Model 94 line. The 20″ barrel, full-length tubular magazine, checkered walnut stocks, straight grip, straight comb, and Winchester rubber buttpad give it a practical sporting configuration, while the XTR trim adds a more refined presentation. The rifle is well set up for field use, with a factory-style beaded front sight, folding rear sight, installed Williams receiver peep sight, and a drilled-and-tapped receiver for scope mounting.
Cosmetically, the rifle presents better than its overall grade might suggest, retaining about 95% of its original blue finish. There are scattered scratches, minor corrosion freckling, handling wear, and operational wear, along with some Loctite residue on the front receiver ring from a prior scope installation. The screw heads remain sharp and the markings are clear. The checkered walnut stocks are in Very Good to Excellent condition, showing only light handling wear apart from a compression dent on the left side of the forend, with no chips or cracks. The rifle’s main detractions are the minor corrosion on the firing pin and breechface, and the corrosion and light pitting noted in the bore.
The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, but minor corrosion and light pitting are scattered throughout, bringing the bore rating to 7/10 in this writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the action functions correctly and the trigger pull is crisp, though the rifle has not been test fired. Overall, this is a strong and appealing Winchester 94 AE XTR in the desirable .356 Winchester chambering, with excellent outward presentation, useful peep-sight and optics-ready features, and solid mechanics. Its collector and shooter appeal are tempered primarily by the bore and breechface corrosion, which place it in Good overall condition despite otherwise Excellent cosmetic qualities.
