Our Assessment: This boxed pair of F.LLI Pietta 1836 Texas Paterson revolvers represents a modern recreation of one of Samuel Colt’s earliest and most historically significant handgun designs. The original Paterson revolvers, introduced in the 1830s, marked a major step forward in repeating firearm technology, featuring a revolving cylinder and distinctive folding trigger. Though early production saw limited success, the design gained recognition through use in Texas and laid the groundwork for later Colt revolvers. Pietta’s 1990 production captures these early mechanical characteristics while presenting them in a durable stainless steel configuration suited to modern collectors and shooters.

Chambered in .36 caliber cap and ball, these revolvers follow the traditional Paterson pattern with a long 9″ octagonal barrel and simple sighting system, consisting of a mortised front cone and hammer notch rear. The .36 caliber bore reflects the original balance of manageable recoil and practical effectiveness, while the percussion ignition system maintains the mechanical simplicity of early revolver development. The folding trigger remains one of the defining features of the Paterson design, highlighting the compact and innovative nature of Colt’s early work.

Both revolvers present in very good to excellent condition, retaining approximately 98% of their original stainless finish with only light handling wear and scattered scratches. The walnut grips show minor marks but remain structurally sound, and the bores are bright with sharp rifling, showing only minimal superficial corrosion. The actions function correctly, and both revolvers display clear markings, with noted “XXX” marks on the underside of the barrel assemblies. Housed in a display box, this pair offers a cohesive and visually appealing presentation of an early Colt pattern reproduced with modern materials.
