Our Assessment: The FN PS90 is the civilian iteration of the FN P90, a bullpup personal defense weapon (PDW) designed in the late 1980s for NATO forces. Known for its futuristic appearance and innovative features, the PS90 retains much of the P90’s groundbreaking design, including its compact bullpup layout, lightweight polymer frame, and a top-mounted translucent magazine capable of holding up to 50 rounds of 5.7x28mm ammunition. To meet civilian firearm regulations, the PS90 operates in semi-automatic mode and features a 16 inch barrel instead of the P90’s shorter 10.4-inch version. Its ambidextrous controls and ergonomic configuration make it a practical choice for personal defense or recreational shooting, while its unique aesthetic has made it a standout among firearms enthusiasts.
The P90 and PS90 have cemented their place in pop culture, frequently appearing in video games and media that emphasize cutting-edge technology. They are often featured in games like Call of Duty, Rainbow Six Siege, Counter-Strike, and Battlefield, where their high-capacity magazine and futuristic design appeal to players seeking a tactical edge. Additionally, the weapon is associated with stealthy and high-tech operators in games like Metal Gear Solid and Ghost Recon. These appearances highlight the P90’s innovative characteristics, such as its compact design and rapid rate of fire, making it a favorite in virtual combat scenarios.
The P90 also gained widespread recognition in the sci-fi television series Stargate SG-1, where it became the primary weapon for the SG-1 team. Its sleek, futuristic appearance aligned perfectly with the show’s themes of advanced alien technology and intergalactic exploration. The P90 was portrayed as a reliable and highly effective weapon, frequently used in tight corridors and alien landscapes, reinforcing its image as a versatile and modern firearm. The PS90, with its roots in the P90’s iconic design, continues to captivate firearm enthusiasts and pop culture fans alike, blending real-world innovation with a sci-fi legacy.
