Our Assessment: The CZ 527 American represents one of the finest modern interpretations of the classic mini-Mauser sporting rifle. Built in the Czech Republic on a true controlled-round-feed action scaled for intermediate cartridges, the 527 gained a strong following among varmint and small game hunters for its smooth cycling, integral 16mm dovetail scope rail, and crisp single-set trigger system. Chambered in .22 Hornet, a cartridge introduced in the 1930s and long prized for its mild report, minimal recoil, and efficient small-game performance, the rifle offers excellent accuracy potential with modest powder charges and flat trajectory inside practical field distances.
This 2019 example presents in excellent overall condition, retaining approximately 99 percent of its original blued finish with deep, dark color throughout. The 22 inch barrel with 1:16 twist shows a bright bore with sharp rifling that rates 10 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion and appears to have seen little use beyond factory testing. The Turkish walnut stock exhibits attractive grain with well-defined checkering and only minimal handling marks, most notably a light scratch along the right side of the buttstock and a small compression at the wrist. The action cycles properly, the safety functions as intended, and the single-set trigger breaks light and clean when engaged. Accompanied by its factory five-round magazine, this is a well-kept late-production 527 American in a classic and increasingly sought-after chambering.
