Our Assessment: This Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Featherweight is a desirable late-production C&R example, manufactured in 1962 and chambered in .264 Winchester Magnum. As a Pre-64 Model 70, it retains the controlled-round-feed action, three-position safety, and classic Winchester build quality that make these rifles highly sought after. The Featherweight configuration adds further appeal, especially with its 22″ barrel, Monte Carlo comb stock, factory-style open sights, hinged floorplate magazine, and receiver provisions for both a receiver sight and scope mounting. The .264 Winchester Magnum chambering is also notable, giving this rifle additional collector and sporting interest beyond a more common standard chambering.
Condition is a strong point overall. The rifle retains about 95% of its original blue finish, with only light handling and operational wear and a few light scratches. The screw heads are sharp, the markings are clear, and the bolt serial number matches the receiver, all of which are important positives for a collectible Pre-64 Model 70. The stock shows scratches and light compression dents throughout, along with a sanded or blurred finish spot on the left side, but no chips or cracks are noted. The stock condition line appears incomplete in the provided description, but based on the stated wear, it would reasonably fall in the Good to Very Good range.
Mechanically, the rifle is reported to function correctly, including the three-position safety, though it has not been test-fired. The bore is rated 8/10, with bright metal, sharp rifling, minor throat erosion, and minor fouling. The throat erosion is worth noting because .264 Winchester Magnum rifles can show wear from higher-velocity use, but this bore still appears fundamentally strong and serviceable. Overall, this is a Very Good condition Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in a desirable magnum chambering, with original finish, matching bolt, strong mechanics, and solid collector-shooter appeal. Its value is moderated mainly by stock wear, the localized sanded finish area, and minor throat erosion, but it remains an attractive rifle for a Winchester collector or vintage hunting-rifle enthusiast.
