Our Assessment:  The Smith & Wesson Model 547 was introduced in 1980 as an innovative response to growing law enforcement and military interest in the 9mm cartridge during the transition away from traditional revolver calibers. Built on the proven K-frame platform, the Model 547 was unique in that it chambered rimless 9mm cartridges without requiring moon clips, utilizing a sophisticated extractor system that remains one of Smith & Wesson’s more technically interesting revolver designs. Produced only for a short period and in relatively limited numbers, the Model 547 has become highly desirable among collectors of modern Smith & Wesson revolvers. The 9mm cartridge, adopted widely by military and police forces throughout the 20th century, offered economical shooting and broad ammunition availability while bridging the gap between revolver and semi-automatic service handgun development.

This 1982-produced 3 inch example remains in excellent condition and presents exceptionally well with strong original blue finish retention, attractive case-colored small parts, and only light signs of handling and operation. The compact 3 inch configuration is especially sought after, combining the balance of the K-frame with enhanced portability and quick handling characteristics. The revolver is currently fitted with attractive checkered rosewood stocks with Pachmayr medallions and also includes Pachmayr rubber stocks, adding versatility and collector appeal. The bore remains excellent, the action is smooth and tight, and the slight plum coloration developing on the barrel adds character often appreciated by collectors of vintage blued revolvers. Accompanied by its Smith & Wesson box and paperwork, this Model 547 represents one of the more distinctive and mechanically innovative revolvers produced during the transitional revolver era of the early 1980s.
