Our Assessment: The Colt 1860 Army 2nd Generation Stainless is a modern-era revival of one of the most important percussion revolvers of the Civil War period, produced during Colt’s late 20th century reintroduction of its black powder line. The original 1860 Army was widely issued and became known for its improved balance, streamlined barrel profile, and effective .44 caliber performance. This 1982 example retains those defining characteristics while featuring full custom engraving across the metal surfaces, giving the revolver a more presentation-oriented appearance while preserving the classic Colt open-top design.

Chambered in .44 caliber black powder, this revolver follows the traditional six-shot percussion configuration with an 8″ barrel, offering a long sight radius and steady handling. The simple sighting system, consisting of a brass front blade and hammer-notch rear, remains true to the original pattern. The stainless construction provides practical resistance to corrosion from black powder fouling, while the extensive engraving adds visual depth and distinction, setting this example apart from standard production models.

This example presents in very good condition, retaining approximately 95% of its original finish with light handling wear and scattered surface marks. The engraving remains well defined, and the walnut grip shows minor compression dents but remains structurally sound. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and only light fouling, and the action functions correctly with good timing and tight lockup. Accompanied by a display box and accessories including a flask, bullet mold, and capper, this revolver represents a well-executed and visually distinctive example of a Colt 2nd Generation 1860 Army with custom embellishment.
