Our Assessment: The Remington Arms Model 600, introduced in 1964, was a bold departure from traditional sporting rifle design, featuring a short, lightweight action, distinctive nylon vent rib, and a compact 18 1/2″ barrel intended for quick handling in dense cover. Designed during a period when hunters increasingly valued portability and speed, the Model 600 gained a following for its unique styling and practical field performance. Chambered in .222 Remington, a cartridge introduced in 1950 and long regarded for its exceptional inherent accuracy, the rifle is well-suited to varmint and small game applications where precision and manageable recoil are key.
This 1964 example presents in strong overall condition, retaining nearly all of its original blued finish with only light handling and operational wear visible. The laminate stock remains in very good shape with scattered handling marks but no structural issues, maintaining the rifle’s compact and distinctive profile. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and only light fouling present, consistent with careful use. The vent rib barrel with integrated sights remains intact, and the receiver is properly drilled and tapped for optics, offering flexibility in configuration. Altogether, this Model 600 stands as a well-preserved example of one of Remington’s most recognisable mid-century sporting rifles.
