Many military and C&R eligible weapons have bores that will show erosion. This is not only due to age but to the fact that corrosive primers were commonly used in ammunition worldwide. For example, the U.S. used corrosive ammunition throughout WWII. The U.S. military did not begin to phase out corrosive-primed ammunition until the 1950s.

Our Assessment: The Persian Model 98/29 rifles produced by CZ Brno are among the finest Mauser contract rifles of the early 20th century, manufactured for the Persian government during the 1930s with exceptional attention to detail and craftsmanship. These rifles are distinguished by their deep blued finish, precise machining, and unique Farsi markings, including the Persian crest and numerals tied to the “1309” designation. Built on the standard Mauser 98 pattern, they feature controlled round feed, strong dual locking lugs, and a reputation for accuracy and reliability. Chambered in 7.92x57mm Mauser, a cartridge introduced in the late 19th century and widely used throughout both World Wars, the platform delivers proven ballistic performance and long service life. This matched pair, with consecutive serial numbers 06678 and 06679, presents as a highly desirable and cohesive set. Both rifles retain approximately 98 percent of their arsenal refurbished finish, with only light handling marks and faint operational wear visible, along with preserved storage grease on internal components. The bores on both rifles are bright with sharp rifling and rate 9 out of 10, showing only light erosion and moderate fouling. The stocks on both rifles remain in strong condition, with 06679 rating in Excellent condition and 06678 in Very Good Plus condition, each showing only minor compression marks and no structural damage. All major components are matching on both rifles, and both retain crisp Persian crests and clear BRNO markings. Each rifle is accompanied by its serial matching bayonet, both of which remain in Excellent condition, further enhancing the completeness and collector appeal of the pair.

Persian contract Mausers are highly sought after for their quality, distinctive markings, and historical context, representing CZ Brno’s peak interwar production. The presence of consecutive serial numbers and matching bayonets elevates this offering beyond a standard example, presenting a rare opportunity to acquire a paired set with strong visual and historical continuity. These rifles combine excellent condition, matching components, and exceptional craftsmanship, making them a standout representation of one of the finest Mauser contracts ever produced. -R.E.
