Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1885 High Wall is one of the most respected single shot rifle designs ever produced, originally developed by John Moses Browning in the late 19th century and prized for its strength, simplicity, and precision. This modern “Traditional Hunter” variant, manufactured by Miroku in Japan, reflects a high standard of fit and finish while remaining faithful to the original High Wall profile. By 2009, these rifles had established a strong following among shooters who appreciated traditional falling block actions paired with modern manufacturing consistency, making them equally at home in the field or on the range.
Chambered in .45-70 Government, this rifle continues the legacy of one of America’s most enduring cartridges. Introduced in 1873, the .45-70 quickly became a mainstay for military and sporting use, valued for its ability to deliver heavy bullets with reliable performance. In a single shot platform such as the High Wall, the cartridge lends itself well to deliberate shooting, offering a balanced combination of power and manageable recoil while maintaining strong historical ties to the black powder era.
This example is configured in a classic long-range style, featuring a 28″ octagon barrel, globe front sight with spirit level, and an MVA #102 Soule mid-range tang sight that enhances precision capability. The rifle retains approximately 98% of its original finish, with only light handling marks present, while the walnut stocks show minor wear without structural issues. The bore remains bright with sharp rifling, though there is noted lead fouling that will benefit from cleaning. The action functions correctly, and the overall presentation reflects careful use. Complete with its box and leather-laced recoil pad, this rifle stands as a well-executed modern High Wall with strong visual appeal and practical shooting configuration.
