Sights / Optics: This shotgun has a brass bead on the top of the serrated barrel rib.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered walnut with a splinter forend, straight wrist, straight comb, and red rubber buttpad. There are light scratches and compression marks throughout. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 14.5” and 13.5″ from the front trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stocks are in about Excellent overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bores are bright. There is no erosion in the bore. There is fouling in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates at a 9 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 98% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows handling wear. There are light scratches throughout. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun is in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The barrel lockup is tight with no play to the receiver. We did not fire this firearm. We have cleaned this firearm and performed a mechanic’s check but expect many will want to clean the firearm again depending on their standards.

Our Assessment: The J.P. Sauer & Sohn side by side shotgun represents postwar West German gunmaking at a high level, produced during a period when Sauer was known for refined sporting arms with excellent fit and finish. Built as a box-lock double with dual mechanical triggers and extractors, these shotguns reflect traditional European design focused on balance, handling, and reliability in the field. Chambered in 20 gauge with a 2 3/4 inch chamber, the platform offers light recoil and responsive handling well suited for upland hunting and sporting use.
This example retains about 98 percent of its refinished metal finish with light handling wear and faint scratches visible across the barrels and receiver. The checkered walnut stock set with splinter forend and straight wrist shows minimal wear with only light marks and remains in Excellent condition with no cracks or chips. The bores are bright with no erosion and light fouling present, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly with tight lockup and smooth operation. Overall, this shotgun presents as a finely made Sauer side by side with classic European styling and strong condition.
