Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 29-2 is one of the most iconic large-frame revolvers ever produced, representing the height of Smith & Wesson’s mid-century craftsmanship and the growing popularity of the .44 Magnum cartridge during the late 1960s. Produced during a pivotal period from 1968–1969, this example falls within the era when the Model 29 was gaining widespread recognition, both in sporting use and in popular culture. The “-2” engineering variant retains desirable features such as the pinned barrel and recessed cylinder, hallmarks of the classic N-frame revolvers. Chambered in .44 Magnum, a cartridge introduced in 1955 and known for its power and versatility, the Model 29 became a defining revolver for both hunters and enthusiasts.

This example with its 6 1/2″ barrel retains approximately 98% of its original blued finish, showing only light handling and operational wear with a few scattered scratches, most notably along the right sideplate near the grip. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, rating 9.5/10, with only light fouling present. The revolver is equipped with the classic orange insert front sight and adjustable white outline rear sight, providing a clear and effective sight picture. The Goncalo Alves target grips remain in Good condition, showing light wear and some blue staining from long-term storage in the presentation case, but no structural damage. The included wood presentation box shows age-related degradation to the interior lining.

The Model 29-2 represents a benchmark in revolver design, combining strength, precision, and refined aesthetics in a platform that has remained highly sought after for decades. The 6 1/2″ barrel length offers a balanced configuration, providing both sight radius and handling characteristics favored by many shooters. This example presents as a well-preserved revolver from a desirable production period, maintaining strong finish, an excellent bore, and solid mechanical function while retaining its original presentation accessories.
