Our Assessment: The Tikka Model 412S is part of a well-regarded modular over/under system developed in the late 20th century to provide hunters with a versatile, multi-purpose firearm capable of accepting interchangeable barrel sets. Originally associated with Finnish design and later production partnerships in Italy, the 412 series became known for its robust construction, precise lockup, and adaptability across both rifle and shotgun configurations. This example, with dedicated 9.3x74R double rifle barrels and a 12 gauge shotgun set, reflects a European hunting tradition where a single firearm could be configured for driven game, large game, or upland hunting. The 9.3x74R cartridge, introduced in the early 20th century, remains a respected medium to large game cartridge, while the 12 gauge continues to be one of the most versatile shotgun chamberings in the world.
This example retains approximately 95% of its original finish, showing light handling wear, scattered scratches, and some corrosion freckling, with more noticeable wear on the receiver. The rifle barrels measure 23 1/2″ and the shotgun barrels 28″, both maintaining strong bore condition. The rifle bores are bright with sharp rifling, rating 9.5/10, while the shotgun bores are bright and clean with only light plastic fouling, also rating 9.5/10. The shotgun barrels are fitted with Carlson’s choke tubes, with Modified and Full installed. The walnut stock remains in Very Good condition, showing light handling wear and finish thinning at the forend from carry, but no structural issues. The sights are appropriate to each barrel set, with folding rear sights for the rifle barrels and fiber optic beads for the shotgun set.
Mechanically, the firearm functions correctly, with a tight lockup, properly operating tang safety, and a crisp trigger break. The selective ejectors and barrel interchangeability operate as intended, reflecting the quality of the 412 system. The Tikka 412S stands as a practical and adaptable sporting platform, combining rifle and shotgun capability in a single, well-engineered firearm. This example presents as a well-maintained and versatile combination gun with excellent bore condition and solid mechanical integrity, representative of European multi-barrel hunting systems.
