Stock Configuration & Condition: The wood stock has a semi-pistol grip, metal nose caps, stacking loop, double sling loops, and a metal butt plate with hinged door for storage. The LOP measures 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the butt plate. The wood shows compressions, scratches, nicks, and chips scattered throughout. Both forend sections show cracks. The stock does not show any cracks. The butt plate has lost its finish, shows rub wear and has lost most of its checkering. The door spring is strong. Overall the stock is in Fair+ condition.
Type of Finish: Blued
Finish Originality: Original.
Bore Condition: The bore is bright, the rifling is well defined, there is barely visible erosion/pitting in the bore mainly in the grooves. The grooves also show fouling. Our gauges show a muzzle of 1.5+ and a throat erosion of 3. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 8/10.
Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 50% of its metal finish. The friction surfaces of the bolt and receiver show rub wear. The rifle shows missing finish and finish thinning throughout. The finish has turned brown and green from age. The markings are mostly clear and the screw heads are sharp. Overall the rifle is in Fair+ condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle includes a leather sling, CMP certificate of authenticity, manual, paperwork, cardboard box with foam and en bloc clip.
Our Assessment: This Springfield Armory M1 Garand is an early World War II example with a receiver manufactured in April 1942 and a later Springfield Armory barrel dated 1955. Designed by John C. Garand, the M1 Garand became the standard U.S. service rifle of World War II and helped redefine infantry firepower as the first standard-issue semi-automatic rifle of a major military power. George S. Patton famously called it “the greatest battle implement ever devised,” a reflection of the rifle’s battlefield impact and lasting reputation. The combination of an early wartime receiver with a later barrel is typical of rifles that remained in military service and were updated through arsenal maintenance programs.
This example was sold by the CMP in 2009, adding a documented chapter to its post-service history through the Civilian Marksmanship Program, which transferred many former U.S. military rifles to the public. The 1955 Springfield barrel suggests continued use or refurbishment during the postwar era, when many Garands were rebuilt for training, reserve service, or reissue. Overall, it represents a historically significant M1 that combines early wartime production with later service-life updates and collectible CMP provenance.
