Our Assessment: The Finnish Valmet Model 412S is a highly regarded modular over/under system developed in the latter half of the 20th century, designed to provide shooters with exceptional versatility through interchangeable barrel sets. Produced in Finland during the 1970s and 1980s, the 412 series built a strong reputation for robust construction, precise machining, and the ability to transition seamlessly between shotgun and rifle configurations. This system allowed a single receiver to serve multiple roles, from upland bird hunting to big game pursuits. The included barrel sets in .30-06 Springfield, .222 Remington over 12 gauge, and both 12 and 20 gauge shotgun configurations highlight the system’s adaptability, pairing classic sporting cartridges with practical field applications across a wide range of hunting scenarios.
This example retains approximately 95% of its original finish, showing light operational wear, scattered scratches, and minor freckling, most noticeable on the receiver. The bores across all four barrel sets are bright with sharp rifling in the rifle barrels, rating approximately 9/10, with only light fouling present. The 12 gauge barrels measure 28″ with fixed Full and Modified chokes, while the 20 gauge set features IC/IC, and the combination set has been upgraded with Briley S-1 choke tubes including IC, Modified, and Full. The rifle barrels are equipped with folding rear sights and a blade front, while the .30-06 set is fitted with a Leupold Vari-X II 3-9×40 scope. The walnut stock shows handling wear, including scratches, dents, and a crack at the wrist, placing it in Fair to Good condition, while maintaining a solid overall structure and classic sporting profile.
The Valmet 412S stands as one of the more refined examples of a multi-barrel sporting system, offering a level of versatility that few traditional firearms can match. Its ability to transition between rifle and shotgun roles with minimal effort reflects a practical design philosophy rooted in efficiency and adaptability. This example, with its multiple barrel sets, choke options, and included optics, presents as a well-equipped and capable system that continues to demonstrate the enduring appeal of Valmet’s modular approach to sporting firearms.
