Our Assessment: The RPK pattern rifle is a light machine gun variant of the Kalashnikov system, developed by the Soviet Union in the early 1960s to provide squad level sustained fire capability. Built on a heavier receiver with a longer barrel and reinforced components, the RPK retained the long stroke gas piston system and rotating bolt of the standard AK platform while improving durability under extended firing. Many semi-automatic civilian examples in the United States are assembled from surplus parts kits using receivers such as those produced by D.C. Industries. Chambered in 7.62x39mm, the intermediate cartridge introduced in 1943, the RPK platform offers the familiar performance of the AK system in a heavier configuration designed for stability and sustained use.
This example is built on a D.C. Industries NDS-7 receiver using a Romanian RPK kit with a 1964 dated trunnion. The rifle retains about 99 percent of its finish with only light handling and operational wear visible across the metal surfaces. The wood furniture set with vented forend shows light handling marks and minor finish wear but remains free of cracks or structural issues, rating in Very Good condition overall. The chrome lined bore is bright with worn rifling and pitting near the muzzle, rating 7 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly and the rifle presents as a solid semi-automatic RPK style build assembled from Romanian components.
