Our Assessment: The Romanian AKT-98 trainer rifle was produced at the Cugir factory as a rimfire training variant of the Kalashnikov platform. Designed to replicate the handling and controls of a standard AK pattern rifle, the AKT-98 allowed for inexpensive training and recreational shooting using the .22 Long Rifle cartridge. Manufactured in the early 2000s for export markets, these rifles retained many traditional AK features including the tangent rear sight, protected front post, and side scope rail. Chambered in .22 LR, the cartridge introduced in 1887 and widely used for training and target shooting, the AKT-98 offers reduced recoil and cost while maintaining familiar ergonomics.

This example was manufactured in 2004 and retains about 97 percent of its original finish with light handling wear, scattered scratches, and minor oxidation visible across the metal surfaces along with light surface rust on the attached bipod. The Romanian wood furniture set with synthetic pistol grip shows minimal wear with only light handling marks and remains free of cracks or chips, rating in Excellent condition overall. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no visible erosion, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The rifle includes one 10 round magazine, though the magazine is noted to have feeding issues related to the internal spring. The action functions correctly and the rifle presents as a clean example of a Romanian AK style rimfire trainer. Please see our high definition photos and good luck on your bids! -N.P
