Our Assessment: The Savage Model 99 is one of the most innovative lever action rifle designs of the 20th century, distinguished by its internal rotary magazine and ability to safely chamber spitzer-style cartridges. Introduced in the late 1800s and continuously refined, the Model 99 became a favorite among hunters for its strength, accuracy, and streamlined profile. By 1962, the platform had fully transitioned into modern smokeless cartridges such as the .308 Winchester, a round introduced in the 1950s that offered efficient ballistics and quickly became a standard for North American big game hunting.
This 99DL variant features a solid frame and 24″ barrel, retaining approximately 95% of its original blued and color case finish with only light scratches, handling marks, and minor thinning at the receiver from carry. The jeweled bolt adds a subtle visual enhancement, complementing the rifle’s classic lines. The checkered walnut stock is in Very Good condition, showing light wear with no cracks or structural issues, and includes sling mounts for field use. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and only light fouling, rating 9.5 out of 10. The rifle retains its original internal rotary magazine with operational cartridge counter, a hallmark feature of the Model 99.
Mechanically, the rifle functions correctly, maintaining the smooth lever operation and reliable feeding system that define the Model 99 design. The factory drilled and tapped receiver allows for optic mounting while still retaining traditional open sights. Overall, this rifle presents as a well-preserved example of a mid-century Savage 99, combining classic lever action handling with modern cartridge capability and strong overall condition.
