Our Assessment: The Isaac Haines style rifle is patterned after the elegant Lancaster County longrifles of the late 18th century, with Haines regarded as one of the more refined makers of the Pennsylvania school. These rifles were known for their graceful architecture, swamped barrels, and decorative yet functional features such as patchboxes and double set triggers, all contributing to excellent balance and accuracy. Chambered here in .45 caliber, this rifle follows the traditional role of longrifles as precise hunting and target arms, well suited to round ball shooting with modest recoil and efficient powder use.
This example presents in Very Good condition, retaining approximately 97% of its applied antiqued finish, which has been intentionally aged to replicate period wear and patina. The full-length maple stock is attractively configured with a jaeger-style cheekpiece and silver patchbox, showing only light scratches and compression dents with no structural issues. The 38″ swamped barrel contributes to proper balance, and the bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling and only light fouling and storage dust, rating 9 out of 10. The rifle is fitted with a silver blade front sight and fixed rear notch, maintaining a traditional sight picture consistent with the style.
Mechanically, the rifle appears functional, with a flintlock that produces spark and a working half-cock safety. The double set triggers are present but currently not functioning in the set mode, and the tang screw is a replacement rather than period-correct. The included ramrod completes the configuration. Overall, this rifle represents a well-executed Isaac Haines style build with strong visual appeal and solid bore condition, while retaining the character and craftsmanship associated with American longrifle traditions.
