Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered walnut stock, with a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb with cheekpiece, red rubber Winchester buttpad, a checkered forend, and sling studs front and rear. The LOP measures 13 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stock shows light handling wear, with a few scratches, dings, and compressions scattered throughout, but most notably on the belly of the buttstock. The stock’s finish is largely intact. The stock fits tightly to the barreled action, with no play. The checkering is mostly well defined, with one ding in the left side of the forend checkering. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stock rates in Good condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 99% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows no notable wear. The bluing is deep and dark throughout. The jeweling on the bolt is vivid and bright, and the bolt body shows only minor operational marks. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in Good to Very Good condition. It would be rated higher, if the stock was in slightly better condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the scope as mentioned above.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 Classic Sporter BOSS represents the return of the controlled round feed action to the Model 70 line in the early 1990s, restoring the pre-1964 style claw extractor and solidifying the rifle’s standing as the “Rifleman’s Rifle.” Chambered in .300 Winchester Magnum, introduced in 1963 and long regarded as one of the most versatile and powerful belted magnums for North American big game, this rifle offers flat trajectory and substantial downrange energy. The addition of Winchester’s BOSS system extends the barrel length to 26 1/2 inches and allows for tunable harmonics to optimize accuracy and manage recoil characteristics.

This example retains approximately 99 percent of its original blued finish, with deep, dark bluing and vivid bolt jeweling showing only minor operational marks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and rates 10 out of 10. The checkered walnut stock, featuring a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb with cheekpiece, and red Winchester buttpad, shows light handling wear with scattered scratches and compressions, primarily on the belly of the buttstock, and one ding in the left forend checkering. The action and safety function correctly. Please see our photos for a better understanding of condition and good luck with your bids! – J.D.
