Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “THE MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NORTH HAVEN, CONN., U.S.A. / MOD. 1894 – CARBINE-MICRO-GROOVE – CAL. .357 MAGNUM”, along with a circled “JM” stamp, just forward of the receiver. The right side of the barrel is marked with Marlin’s 2-line warning. The top tang is marked with the serial number.
Barrel Length: 18 1/2″
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade, dovetailed to the barrel. The rear sight is a folding semi-buckhorn U-notch sight on a riser, dovetailed to the barrel. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped for optics.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are a two-piece smooth walnut stock set, with a straight grip, straight comb, checkered plastic Marlin buttplate, and a banded forend. The LOP measures 13 3/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The Marlin “Bullseye” is present in the belly of the buttstock. The stocks show light wear, with scattered scratches and dings throughout. The stock’s finish is largely intact. The stocks fit tightly to the frame, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stocks rate in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is some minor fouling present. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light handling wear, with a few minor hairline scratches and superficial imperfections throughout the metal surfaces. The bluing is deep and dark throughout. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads range from sharp to tooled, but all retain strong and serviceable slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the half-cock safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Marlin Model 1894 Carbine in .357 Magnum is one of the most practical and enduring pistol-caliber lever actions of the late 20th century. Built in 1982 during the desirable North Haven production era and bearing the JM stamp, this rifle reflects Marlin’s solid-top, side-eject design and Micro-Groove rifling, features that helped distinguish it from its contemporaries. Chambered for .357 Magnum and capable of firing .38 Special, the cartridge traces its roots to 1935 and remains one of the most versatile revolver rounds ever developed, offering a balance of controllable recoil and effective terminal performance in both handgun and carbine platforms.
This example retains approximately 98 percent of its original blued finish with only light handling marks and minor superficial imperfections. The walnut stocks remain tight to the frame with the Marlin bullseye intact, showing only scattered light scratches and dings while rating Very Good overall. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and rates 10 out of 10. The action cycles properly and the half-cock safety functions as intended. With its 18 1/2 inch barrel, clean lines, and strong overall condition, this 1894 Carbine represents a classic and highly usable example of Marlin’s proven lever gun design.
