Our Assessment: The Heckler & Koch HK94, manufactured in 1983 according to the “ID” date code, represents the civilian semi-automatic rifle counterpart to the legendary MP5 submachine gun platform. Produced in West Germany and imported through HK Inc. in Arlington, Virginia, the HK94 utilized the same roller-delayed blowback operating system that defined the MP5 family. This system uses a pair of locking rollers in the bolt head to delay rearward movement of the bolt, resulting in smooth recoil impulse and reliable operation with the 9mm cartridge. With its 16 inch barrel and classic HK receiver profile, the HK94 became one of the most desirable civilian imports prior to later restrictions on foreign military-style rifles. Chambered in 9x19mm Luger, the widely adopted service pistol cartridge introduced in the early 20th century, the HK94 feeds from MP5-pattern magazines and shares the same sighting system and manual of arms as its military counterpart. This example retains approximately 99 percent of its original black enamel finish with only minimal handling marks visible. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no visible erosion, earning a rating of 9.75 out of 10. The rifle is equipped with a receiver-mounted scope base carrying an Aimpoint Mark III optic, currently without a battery but remaining in Very Good condition. The three-piece polymer furniture set remains in Very Good Plus condition with only light handling wear.
Mechanically, the roller-delayed action functions correctly and the measured bolt gap is approximately 0.018 inches. The receiver markings and Ulm proof remain clear and well defined, and the pins remain unmarred. Included with the rifle is one fifteen-round HK magazine. Overall, this 1983 HK94 stands as a well-preserved example of one of the most desirable West German HK civilian imports, combining the classic MP5-derived operating system with strong cosmetic condition and period-correct optics. -R.E.
