Our Assessment: The Imperial German Navy adopted the P.04 Naval Luger as its standard sidearm in the years leading up to the First World War. Manufactured by Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken, the Naval Luger differed from the standard P.08 infantry pistol by its longer 6 inch barrel and distinctive two position rear sight graduated for 100 and 200 meters. Chambered in 9mm Parabellum, the cartridge introduced with the Luger pistol in the early twentieth century, the P.04 became closely associated with Imperial German naval service during the First World War. Production of these pistols occurred primarily before and during the early years of the war, making surviving examples an important part of Imperial German military sidearm history.
This example is a 1917 dated Naval Luger with matching serialized components throughout the pistol marked with the “62” suffix. The pistol retains about 85 percent of its original blue and straw finish with scattered scratches, thinning along the leading edges, and small areas of corrosion pitting on the barrel. The checkered wood grip panels show handling wear with scratches, compression marks, and minor chips but remain intact overall with much of the checkering still sharp. The bore appears semi bright with defined rifling along with light erosion and moderate pitting present, rating 6 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly and the pistol includes a leather holster along with three non matching wood floorplate magazines.
