Our Assessment: In 1965 Colt produced a special commemorative series celebrating the reconstruction of Old Fort Des Moines, a historic military installation that played an important role in the early development of Des Moines, Iowa. Originally established in 1843 as a United States Army frontier post at the confluence of the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers, the fort served as a base for the protection of settlers and the administration of the surrounding frontier territory. By the mid twentieth century the site had become an important historical landmark, and the 1965 reconstruction project prompted Colt to produce a limited commemorative revolver series honoring the fort and its place in American frontier history.
To mark the occasion, Colt produced a limited run of commemorative revolvers including the Single Action Army and the Frontier Scout. Only 700 Frontier Scout commemoratives were produced, and among those Colt assembled just 100 matched pairs consisting of a gold plated Single Action Army chambered in .45 Colt and a matching Frontier Scout chambered in .22 LR. These revolvers feature full gold plated finishes and commemorative barrel markings referencing the reconstruction of Old Fort Des Moines in 1965. Built on Colt’s iconic single action revolver designs, the pair combines the classic Peacemaker profile with the smaller rimfire Frontier Scout, creating an attractive commemorative presentation celebrating both American frontier firearms and an important historic site.
This matched pair represents one of those scarce factory matched sets, with the revolvers bearing corresponding commemorative serial numbers and maintaining excellent overall condition. Both revolvers retain nearly all of their original gold plated finish with only minimal storage and handling marks visible. The Pearl-Lite grips with gold Colt medallions complement the presentation appearance, and the Frontier Scout remains accompanied by its white presentation case marked for the Old Fort Des Moines reconstruction. With only one hundred matched pairs produced, this set stands as a scarce Colt commemorative pairing tied to a specific American historical event and location.
