Type of Finish: Both revolvers are fully gold plated.
Finish Originality: Original.
Bore Condition: WE BELIEVE THAT THESE REVOLVERS ARE UNFIRED, OUTSIDE OF FACTORY TESTING!!! The bores are bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion present or fouling. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10 out of 10.
Overall Condition: These revolvers retain about 98% of their gold plated metal finish. The only finish wear appears to be from storage and old oil residue. The ejector housing finish is fading slightly on the both revolvers from wear in the case. Neither revolver shows a turn line through the finish. The balance shows very minimal wear both handling and storage. There are no carbon rings on the face of the cylinder and only a couple of minor smudge marks from storage can be seen. The screw heads are sharp and the markings are clear. Overall, both of these revolvers rate in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: Due to the high condition of these revolvers, we elected not to operate the actions and risk damage to the finish. We did not fire this revolver. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Each revolver comes in a felt-lined wood presentation case and cardboard protection sleeve. The cases are marked with an image of a Gold Miner and with the Colt logo. There are two presentation plaques included. One stating that this is a California Gold Rush .22/.45 Set,/ Serial No. 6 of 130. And the other plaque stating that this was originally from the collection of William R. Richman.
Our Assessment: The Colt Single Action Army and Colt Frontier Scout have long been used by Colt as platforms for historically themed commemoratives, particularly those celebrating the mythology and expansion of the American West. This matched California Gold Rush set pays tribute to the era sparked by the discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill in 1848, an event that triggered the massive migration known as the California Gold Rush and helped define the cultural image of the frontier. During the 1960s Colt produced numerous commemorative revolvers reflecting Western history, and these special editions were often finely finished and issued in limited numbers for collectors.
This particular set is especially scarce, as only 130 matched pairs were produced. The revolvers were manufactured two years apart—1966 for the Single Action Army chambered in .45 Colt and 1964 for the Frontier Scout chambered in .22 Long Rifle—with matching serial numbers linking the pair together. Both revolvers feature full gold plating, simulated ivory grips with Colt medallions, and special “California Gold Rush Model” barrel markings. Matching commemorative sets such as this were designed as display pieces rather than working revolvers, typically sold with fitted presentation cases and accessories that reinforced their historical theme and collector appeal.
This example represents set number 6 of the 130 produced, making it an exceptionally early number within an already limited run. Both revolvers appear unfired outside of factory testing and retain the majority of their original gold plated finishes, accompanied by their presentation cases and plaques identifying the set and its provenance from the William R. Richman collection. Because commemorative Colt sets were often separated over time, intact matched pairs with their original accessories are significantly more desirable to collectors. With its extremely low serial number, matched revolvers, and complete presentation accessories, this California Gold Rush commemorative set stands as a scarce and visually striking collector piece celebrating one of the most famous periods of American frontier history.
