Our Assessment: The Colt Sauer Sporting Rifle R8010 represents a collaboration between Colt and J.P. Sauer & Sohn during the 1970s and 1980s, combining American branding with German precision manufacturing. These rifles are known for their refined machining, smooth bolt operation, and distinctive European styling, often positioned as premium sporting arms of their era. Chambered in .375 H&H Magnum, a cartridge introduced in 1912 and long regarded as one of the most versatile dangerous game calibers, the rifle reflects a tradition of big game hunting where power, reliability, and controlled performance were essential.
This example retains approximately 90% of its original blued finish with light handling marks, scattered minor corrosion freckles, and some thinning near the muzzle. The 23 1/2″ barrel has been Magnaported, reducing recoil in a cartridge of this class, and is fitted with a beaded front sight, though the bead is damaged, and a Williams adjustable rear sight. The receiver is drilled and tapped and currently fitted with Redfield bases for optics. The walnut stock features a Monte Carlo cheekpiece, capped forend, and ventilated recoil pad, and has undergone a professional wrist repair with reinforcement and pinning, with documentation included. While the repair appears well executed, it is a notable feature that defines the stock’s condition.
The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no visible erosion, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion, with some copper fouling present. The action functions correctly and the trigger exhibits a crisp break, consistent with the quality expected from Sauer-produced rifles. The rifle is missing its detachable magazine, which is a key component of the design. Overall, this Colt Sauer R8010 stands as a solid example of a European-made sporting rifle chambered in a classic dangerous game cartridge, presenting well mechanically while reflecting condition considerations in the stock repair and missing magazine.
