Our Assessment: The Colt Single Action Army has been one of the most enduring symbols of the American frontier since its introduction in 1873. Known as the Peacemaker, the revolver became closely associated with cowboys, lawmen, and settlers across the American West. Over the years Colt has produced numerous special commemorative editions of the Single Action Army to celebrate important historical events and regional heritage, often incorporating distinctive engraving, precious metal finishes, and presentation cases intended for collectors.

This example is the Texas Sesquicentennial Sheriff’s Model Commemorative produced in 1986 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Texas independence from Mexico in 1836. This specific commemorative qualifies  as a C&R under the ATF list of exceptions. The revolver features extensive gold etched decoration including the outline of the State of Texas with the commemorative dates, Longhorn steers and a cowboy scene on the barrel, and a cylinder decorated with the Republic of Texas seal and the Texas state flag. The backstrap is further embellished with a gold etched image of the Alamo along with the famous “Come and Take It” motto. Built in the Sheriff’s Model configuration with a 4 inch barrel and no ejector rod housing, the revolver presents the compact profile historically favored by some lawmen and gamblers during the frontier era.

This example, serial number TX0004, is an especially desirable low numbered example and appears to remain unfired outside of factory testing. The revolver retains about 99 percent of its original finish with only minor signs of storage such as light oil staining inside the frame and on the top strap. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, and the revolver shows no cylinder turn line. It is accompanied by its original French Oak presentation case with Rhumba red velvet lining, presentation plate, and cardboard protective box.
