Our Assessment: The Soviet Model 1891/30 Mosin Nagant rifle served as the standard infantry rifle of the Red Army throughout the Second World War and remains one of the most widely produced military rifles in history. Manufactured at the Izhevsk Arsenal as well as Tula, the M91/30 represented an improved version of the earlier Model 1891 design with updated sights and simplified wartime manufacturing while retaining the rugged Mosin Nagant bolt action system. Chambered in 7.62x54R, the rimmed cartridge adopted by Russia in 1891, these rifles fired one of the longest serving military cartridges still in use today. During the height of the war in the early 1940s, Soviet arsenals produced these rifles in enormous numbers to equip the Red Army during the fighting on the Eastern Front.
This example was produced at the Izhevsk Arsenal in 1943 and retains matching serialized components. The rifle retains about 96 percent of its metal finish with scattered handling marks, light nicks, and operational wear along the muzzle and buttplate. The two piece hardwood stock shows typical service wear with scratches, compression marks, and light finish loss but remains structurally sound overall. The rifle has been fitted with a VP.OBR 1934 pattern scope marked “OO.V.P / VP.OBR. 1934G.” with serial number N55590 dated 1934, mounted to the receiver with screw mounts. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and light fouling present, rating 8 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The screw mounts are drilled into the chamber area and should be inspected by a qualified gunsmith prior to firing. The action functions correctly and the rifle presents as a wartime Mosin Nagant fitted with an optic. Please see our high definition photos and good luck on your bids! -N.P
