Action Type: Single and Double-Action Revolver that has a 6-Round Cylinder with an Ejector

Markings: The left side of the frame is marked “GLISENTI/ BESCIANA over a shield. The hammer, barrel trigger guard and cylinder are marked “21” which is likely a bin number so that all parts would match the revolver. The serial number “MY20” is marked on the right rear of the frame and the cylinder. There are multiple Italian proof marks throughout the revolver.

Barrel Length: 6 1/4″

Sights/ Optics: The front sight is a blade on a domed base, dovetailed to the barrel. The rear sight is a “U” notch cut into the top strap.

Stock Configuration & Condition/ Grip: The grip panels are two-piece checkered wood, with a lanyard ring on the bottom of the grip frame. The grip panels have scattered handling marks, nicks and scuffs. The checkering is heavily worn but remains defined throughout. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in Fair to Good condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is semi- bright and the rifling sharp. There is no notable erosion. There is light fouling. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 8/10.

Overall Condition: The pistol retains about 20% of its metal finish. Most of the remaining bluing is in the cylinder flutes and protected areas. The gun has moderate handling marks, nicks and scuffs. The majority of finish has turned to a mottled patina. Notably, there is finish loss around the muzzle, wear along the leading edges. The markings remain clear but fading. The screwheads are lightly tooled, but they remain serviceable. Overall, the gun is in Fair to Good condition.

Mechanics: The single action functions correctly. The double action functions but is jerky. The cylinder locks with light play on each chamber. The ejector rod appears to be stock but possibly serviceable. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Glisenti Model 1874 revolver represents an important step in the evolution of European military sidearms during the late nineteenth century. Produced in Brescia, this revolver was Italy’s answer to contemporary service designs such as the French Chamelot-Delvigne Model 1873, adopting a similar solid frame and double action system. Chambered in 10.35mm, it was developed specifically for Italian military use and served as a standard issue sidearm during a period of modernization across European armed forces.

Manufactured between 1874 and 1889, these revolvers were eventually replaced by the later Bodeo Model 1889, making surviving examples increasingly desirable among collectors of early European military firearms. The Glisenti 1874 is notable for its robust construction, distinctive profile, and transitional design features that bridge earlier percussion revolvers and more modern cartridge firing handguns. Its use of a purpose built cartridge and domestic production also reflect Italy’s efforts to establish independence in arms manufacturing during this era.

This example shows typical wear consistent with age and service, retaining a modest amount of original finish with the balance having developed a patina over time. The markings remain visible, and the revolver maintains functional single action operation with a serviceable double action. As an antique military revolver with clear historical context and period correct features, it would make a compelling addition to a collection focused on European service arms.
