Our Assessment: Smith & Wesson introduced the .44 Magnum revolver in 1955 through a collaboration with Remington and influential big bore handgun experimenters such as Elmer Keith, whose work with heavy .44 Special loads demonstrated the potential for a new high powered revolver cartridge. Built on Smith & Wesson’s large N-frame, the revolver quickly gained a reputation for strength and performance. When Smith & Wesson adopted its modern model numbering system in 1957, the revolver became the Model 29. By the 1970s the Model 29 had become one of the most recognizable revolvers in the world, further cemented in popular culture through its association with the Dirty Harry films and its reputation as one of the most powerful production handguns of its era.
The Model 29-2 variant, produced from 1961 through 1982, represents one of the most widely encountered and respected configurations of the series. These revolvers feature the classic pinned barrel construction and recessed cylinder chambers characteristic of Smith & Wesson’s high quality revolver manufacturing of the period. The long 8 3/8 inch barrel offered an extended sight radius and increased velocity from the powerful .44 Magnum cartridge, making it a favored configuration among handgun hunters and shooters seeking maximum performance from the platform.
This example, serial number N427742, was manufactured in the late 1970s and remains in Very Good to Fine overall condition, retaining the vast majority of its original blue finish. The revolver is fitted with the traditional checkered wood target stocks with football cutouts and S&W medallions, complementing the long barreled N-frame profile. The bore remains bright with sharp rifling and the revolver displays only light handling wear consistent with careful ownership. With its classic configuration, powerful chambering, and strong condition, this Smith & Wesson Model 29-2 represents a fine example of the iconic American big bore revolver.
