Our Assessment: This Smith and Wesson Model 66-2 BATF Commemorative was produced in 1983 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, spanning the years 1933 to 1983. These revolvers feature special markings including the Treasury Department Special Agent badge on the sideplate and commemorative barrel inscription, linking the revolver to the long history of federal firearms enforcement. Built on the stainless K-frame and chambered in .357 Magnum, it reflects the service revolver era when durable, medium-frame magnums were standard issue for federal and state agencies.
The Smith & Wesson Model 66 is the stainless steel counterpart to the famed Model 19 and represents one of the most recognizable K-frame service revolvers produced by Smith & Wesson. Introduced in the early 1970s, the Model 66 combined the durability of stainless construction with the power of the .357 Magnum cartridge, making it a popular choice among law enforcement agencies and shooters who wanted a rugged yet well-balanced duty revolver. Its 4-inch barrel, adjustable sights, and smooth double-action trigger made it well suited for both service carry and range use.
This revolver remains in Very Good overall condition with typical handling and operational wear. The bore is bright with strong rifling, and the action functions correctly with a smooth double-action pull and crisp single-action break. The revolver is fitted with smooth Goncalo Alves target stocks with speedloader cuts, completing the classic appearance of this commemorative service revolver. As a special edition marking a milestone in federal law enforcement history, this Model 66-2 offers both historical interest and practical shootability for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
