Most antique firearms have bores that will show erosion. This is not only due to age but to the use of black powder. When fired, black powder reacts corrosively. NRA Antique Firearm Conditions Standards are quite lenient for bores. In some cases, the NRA standards disregarded the bore’s condition for collectors’ firearms.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. There are light scratches and wear marks throughout along with some small spots of patina. The action has light wear. The screw heads are lightly tooled but have serviceable slots. The markings are sharp. This rifle rates an Excellent condition as an Antique. The bayonet is in very good condition with some moderate wear and patina. The scabbard is in good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. This rifle should not be fired except with black powder cartridges. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: This Prussian Infanterie Gewehr Modell 71/84 was manufactured at the Spandau Arsenal in 1888 and represents one of the final developments of the Mauser black powder military rifle system prior to the adoption of smokeless powder arms. The 71/84 introduced a tubular magazine system to the original Model 1871 bolt-action rifle, allowing for an eight-round capacity and marking Germany’s transition toward repeating infantry rifles. The long 31.5 inch barrel, tangent rear sight graduated to 1600 meters, and full-length stock reflect the military doctrine of the late 19th century, emphasizing controlled, accurate volley fire. Rifles of this pattern saw service during a period of rapid technological advancement just before the widespread adoption of smokeless powder cartridges. This rifle is chambered in 11x60mmR, a black powder cartridge developed for German military service and typical of the era’s large-caliber infantry rifles. The bore is bright with well-defined rifling and no visible erosion, earning a rating of 9.75 out of 10 for an antique firearm. The rifle retains approximately 95 percent of its metal finish with light scratches, wear marks, and small areas of patina visible. The stock remains in Very Good condition with scattered dents and minor chipping but no structural cracks, maintaining solid integrity and fit.

This rifle retains matching serialized components and sharp markings, with screw heads that show light tool marks but remain serviceable. The overall condition reflects careful preservation for a rifle of this age. The rifle includes a leather sling along with a bayonet marked by Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Co. and its scabbard. Overall, this Model 71/84 stands as an excellent example of a late black powder era German service rifle, combining strong bore condition, matching components, and historical significance from a pivotal period in military firearms development. -R.E.
