Our Assessment: The Mortimer pattern rifle is inspired by the elegant English sporting rifles produced during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, a period when British gunmakers such as Mortimer, Manton, and others were producing finely crafted flintlock arms for hunting and target shooting. These rifles reflected the high level of craftsmanship associated with English gunmaking of the era, combining graceful lines with practical field performance. Flintlock rifles of this type were widely used by sportsmen throughout Europe and the British Empire before percussion ignition systems gradually replaced flintlocks in the mid 19th century.

This example is a modern reproduction manufactured by Davide Pedersoli of Italy, a company well known for producing historically accurate black powder firearms. Pedersoli rifles are widely respected among muzzleloading shooters for their quality construction and faithful interpretation of traditional designs. The Mortimer model follows the styling of English sporting rifles with its half stock walnut configuration, checkered straight wrist, and long 36 inch barrel. The flintlock ignition system paired with the two leaf folding rear sight and blade front sight maintains the classic appearance and operation associated with early sporting rifles.

This rifle remains in very good to excellent overall condition and retains approximately 95 percent of its original browned, blued, and case colored finish. The walnut stock shows light scratches, minor compression dents, and mild weathering near the buttstock but remains free of chips or cracks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and rates approximately 9.5 out of 10 with only light dust from storage noted. The flintlock functions as intended and produces sparks when tested. The rifle includes a sling and presents as a very attractive example of Pedersoli’s Mortimer flintlock sporting rifle.
