Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1892 Rifle stands as one of John Browning’s most refined lever action designs, scaled perfectly for pistol caliber cartridges and celebrated for its smooth cycling and strength. Produced in 1913, this 24 inch octagonal barreled example represents the classic sporting rifle configuration that bridged the Old West and the early 20th century sporting era. The capped forend, straight grip walnut stock, and steel crescent buttplate give the rifle its unmistakable Winchester profile. The Beach style front sight and semi buckhorn rear speak to period accuracy preferences, while the installed Lyman tang peep sight offers a longer sight radius and practical precision consistent with serious field use. The unevenly trimmed ears on the rear sight reflect modifications made during its working life.
Chambered in .44-40 Winchester Center Fire, also known as .44 W.C.F., the rifle is paired with one of the most iconic cartridges of the frontier period. Introduced in 1873 for the Winchester Model 1873, the .44-40 was widely adopted in both rifles and revolvers, offering practical versatility for ranchers and outdoorsmen. In the stronger Model 1892 action, the cartridge continued to serve as an effective option for deer sized game and general sporting use. The bore on this example is bright with well defined rifling, showing light erosion and rating 8 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly with a crisp trigger and proper half cock safety position, maintaining the dependable mechanical qualities that define the 92 pattern.
This rifle retains approximately 50 percent of its current metal finish, with areas of chemical bluing loss visible on the barrel and wear along leading edges and high points. The receiver has transitioned to a silver patina with scattered corrosion staining, and there are nicks, scratches, and operational wear consistent with honest use. Screw heads range from sharp to tool marked but retain strong slots, and the factory markings remain clear and legible. The walnut stocks rate in Good condition, showing scratches, handling wear, compression dents, small cracks at the forend and wrist, and some iron staining in the wrist area. Altogether, this is a well preserved 1913 Winchester Model 1892 Rifle that carries the character of a working sporting arm while retaining strong bore condition and mechanical integrity.
