Our Assessment: The Colt Single Action Army Third Generation represents the continuation of one of the most iconic revolver designs in American firearms history. First introduced in 1873, the Single Action Army became synonymous with the American frontier, military service, and sporting use. The Third Generation models, produced beginning in the mid-1970s and continuing through the late twentieth century, preserved the classic Peacemaker profile while benefiting from improved manufacturing consistency and modern metallurgy. By 1995, production numbers remained relatively modest, and the revolvers retained traditional features including the side loading gate, fixed sights, and four-click hammer operation that defined the original design.
Chambered in .45 Colt, the cartridge most closely associated with the Single Action Army’s historic legacy, this revolver features the desirable 4 3/4-inch barrel length, offering a balance of quick handling and classic proportions. The revolver retains approximately 98% of its original blued and case-hardened finish, with only minimal thinning at the leading edges and a very faint intermittent turn line on the cylinder. The bore is mirror bright with sharp rifling and no fouling or erosion, rating 10 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The two-piece checkered hard rubber grips are in Excellent condition with minimal handling marks and no chips or cracks. Markings are clear throughout, with matching serial numbers present on the frame, grip frame components, cylinder face, and hand-marked inside of the grips.
Mechanically, the action functions correctly with tight lockup and no perceptible play. The hammer spring remains strong and the trigger break is crisp, reflecting proper mechanical condition. Screw heads are sharp and undamaged. Overall, this Third Generation Single Action Army rates in Fine condition and presents as a well-preserved example of Colt’s modern production of its legendary revolver design.
